- Along the tops, install J-channel trim with horizontal siding and base trim with vertical siding. Cut the trim so it is two channel widths longer than the opening’s width. Miter or cut tabs at the ends.
- Vinyl siding installation is designed to hang loosely on the sheathing so that it can expand and contract with temperature changes. To prevent the relatively thin panels from buckling, observe these fitting and nailing rules.

There are three ways to cut vinyl siding, each of which is the best for different circumstances. If you need to cut a lot of vinyl strips and you're making short, vertical cuts, the quickest and cleanest way to work is with a circular saw. If you're only cutting a few strips of vinyl and making vertical cuts, using a pair of tin snips is simplest. If you need to cut vinyl strips lengthwise -- making much longer cuts -- use a utility knife for the best control.
Circular Saw
- Fit a circular saw with a fine-toothed plywood-cutting blade. For the smoothest cuts, put the blade in backward. Put on safety goggles.
- Lie a strip of vinyl siding on a flat work table. Slide the end of the siding off the table until the place where you plan to cut it is just past the edge of the table. Put a carpenter's square just under the strip to make sure the strip is forming right angles with the edge of the table.
- Hold the strip of siding and the carpenter's square steady on the table with one hand. With the other, slowly saw off the excess, using the edge of the table as a guide. Repeat the process with the remaining strips of siding.
Tin Snips
- Place a strip of siding on the work table and align the place you plan to cut it with the edge of the table. Set the carpenter's square under the siding to keep it perpendicular to the edge of the table.
- Hold the siding and the carpenter's square steady with one hand. With the other, begin cutting through the piece of siding with a pair of tin snips. Close the snips about two-thirds of the way.
- Open the snips and press them forward if the first snip didn't cut all the way through the strip of siding. Make additional cuts as necessary until the excess siding falls free. For clean cuts, don't close the snips all the way.

Utility Knife
- Place a strip of siding face-up on the work table. Place a straightedge lengthwise on the strip to mark where you plan to cut it.
- Score along the straightedge with a utility knife. Use medium pressure. Set aside the straightedge.
- Bend the strip of siding along the cut and snap the vinyl. If it doesn't snap easily, bend it forward and backward until the vinyl weakens and breaks.
